Google Maps Earth View

Evening everyone, it’s been one hell of a long week this week.  I have been working on a major project which is going live in the UK Legal sector tomorrow morning at 6am, my part is ready but everyone else’s isn’t!  So having only just eaten my tea, I really can’t be bothered to do any work or continue with the PHP oAuth Twitter scripts that I am working on!

So I am listening to This Week in Google (TWiG), and taking a look at @Google ‘s latest offering in the maps department.  Google Maps has now integrated Google Earth into the web browser interface.  Meaning that you get all the great Google Earth items via your browser with out the need to install and run Google Earth.  I will point out however that there is a plugin that is required, it works in @Firefox / Google Chrome and IE on Windows, and Firefox / Safari on mac.

The reason that I post about this is because I was amazed how many 3D buildings have been sketched up in Bristol (UK).

For those that do not know, that is the centre of Bristol.  Not only is a building that is only a few months old there, but even the little pillars down the middle of the parade are there!  Who ever sketched these up, thank you!!

The only down point of this, is now I can easily use Google Earth when I am meant to be doing something else!

Signing Off another pointless post!

Twitter @anywhere

Last night Twitter brought out the @anywhere program, releasing the code to the developer community. A community which is currently rather worried for its survival, as Twitter have also announced their purchase of the Tweetie iPhone application.

With Twitter releasing their own iPhone application, many current application developers are worried that people will not want to purchase their own (or use the free advert supported ones), when they can simply use the “official Twitter application”. However Biz Stone (@biz) and the rest of his team have tried to convince us that all is well in the Twitter API world, and they have sweetened the deal with @anywhere.

What is @anywhere I hear you ask (or am I just imagining that!?), well you may notice that if you hover over any of the Twitter user names in this post you will see something that looks like this.

Example Twitter @anywhere hovercards

An example of my Twitter @anywhere hovercards

The above image is an example of the “Twitter Hovercard”, the left is the initial card when you hover over a username such as @jamesakadamingo. The right hovercard is shown when you click the “more” link alongside the location in my hovercard.  As you can see it shows my default profile information and my last tweet.

Currently this is the only feature that I am implementing, but wait around and some more will turn up!!

April Fools Day at Google

Right firstly I am glad to say that I’m safe, its gone midday here in England so no more April Fools to be done!  A fellow IT Geek any I did manage to pull one on one of the first line support team here at work.  As soon as he gets in to the office, he sits at his desk and turns on his desk fan.  Strangely this morning it seams that a tea bag had been cut open and placed inside of his fan, so unfottunatly as soon as he turned it on he got covered in tea leaves!

But back to the subject of the post, April Fools day at the Googleplex.  It is widely known that Google love April fools day, each year on this day Google teams no matter how small get to pull a few pranks on their users.  So are more obvious than others, like out first prank.

You’re not in Mountain View anymore Dorothy!

Google becomes Topeka

Google's new name, Topeka

Topeka Kansas (USA), recently re-named themselves to Google in the hope that they would be chosen as one of the US Cities to have Google “Light The Dark Fibre” and give them giga-bit internet (but that’s another story).  After witnessing such a dramatic move, Google has decided to show Kansas the love and has changed it’s company name to “Topeka”.  They have even gone as far as to explain how to use their new name in a sentance correctly.

How to use Topeka in speech.

You can read the full and official Google Press Release on the Google Blog.

I must point out that this obviously can not be a joke, as it was posted by “Eric Schmidt, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Topeka Inc.”!!
