Seriously back up your databases!

Backups Backups and more Backups, always an important mantra. I was surprised to find that a fellow geek wasn’t backing up his MySQL database that runs his website. Yea he has backups for all the code files, but not for his content!

It frightened me when I found out how many people don’t backup their websites SQL databases. Every WordPress blog runs off of a SQL (normally MySQL) database, if you use a WP-Hosted blog then your safe as they back it up for you. If you host your own WP blog (or geeklog, drupal, etc, etc) then your backups are up to you!

It is for that reason that I have just finished knocking together a page detailing how my simple Linux script backups up my databases at regular intervals (some hourly, some every two, some once a day!) zips them and emails the smaller ones to me!

Check out the article on “Backing up MySQL databases automatically in Linux“.

Twitter @anywhere

Last night Twitter brought out the @anywhere program, releasing the code to the developer community. A community which is currently rather worried for its survival, as Twitter have also announced their purchase of the Tweetie iPhone application.

With Twitter releasing their own iPhone application, many current application developers are worried that people will not want to purchase their own (or use the free advert supported ones), when they can simply use the “official Twitter application”. However Biz Stone (@biz) and the rest of his team have tried to convince us that all is well in the Twitter API world, and they have sweetened the deal with @anywhere.

What is @anywhere I hear you ask (or am I just imagining that!?), well you may notice that if you hover over any of the Twitter user names in this post you will see something that looks like this.

Example Twitter @anywhere hovercards

An example of my Twitter @anywhere hovercards

The above image is an example of the “Twitter Hovercard”, the left is the initial card when you hover over a username such as @jamesakadamingo. The right hovercard is shown when you click the “more” link alongside the location in my hovercard.  As you can see it shows my default profile information and my last tweet.

Currently this is the only feature that I am implementing, but wait around and some more will turn up!!

Google Picasa and WordPress

Is this Picasa or a hippy version of Aperture Science?

Picasa's Logo. It makes me wonder if Picasa are infact a hippy department of Aperture Science!

It’s taken me a while to find a WordPress plugin that does what I want it to do, but I think that I have finally found one.

I have started to play with a few of Google’s applications, after listening to the T.W.i.G (This week in Google) Podcast by Leo Laporte.  One of the first PC apps (rather than web app) that I chose to test was Picasa.  For those that do not know about Picasa, it is a photo editing and organising program for both the PC and Mac.  The software provides some great features to allow you to organise your pictures, and also provides you with the ability to upload them to your own Picasa web album for all your friends and family to see.

The feature which really impressed me with Picasa is its facial recognition system.  Shortly after it loaded all my pictures (only a few minutes for over 30GB of photos), I was informed that it had found some faces and would I like to identify them!  After tagging a few people into photos (akin to Facebook), I was surprised to see an little notification asking me to validate its guesses!  It had taken the pictures I had manually tagged, and found other pictures with those people in them.

Along with the upload and facial recognition features, Picasa also provides some touch up and alteration features, from the tipical Red Eye tools to a “straighten” feature which allows you to sort out those slightly wonkey pictures!

The Photos page of my site is now pulled from my Picasa web albums, by a WordPress plugin known as kPicasa.  There are others out there, but I found kPicasa to be an easy to use yet fully featured plugin.

Feel free to take a look at my photos, and leave any comments if you wish!

WordPress Plugins

Evening All,

A few friends have recently asked me what WordPress plugins I use, so I thought that I might list them here for them all to see! I know that I am not the most exhaustive user of WordPress plugins, but I do have a few that I like.

Akismet - The WordPress Spam Filter

Akismet

Akismet comes pre-installed with most WordPress installations, it is the standard WordPress spam filter.  It checks each in coming comment against an ever evolving list of spam criteria.  I strongly recommend turning it on.

A simple Social Widget for WordPress

Add this social bookmarking widget

We have all seen this on someones page, either a news site or a blog.  It is a simple widget that allows people to fire off posts to their favorite social bookmarking or networking site if they like what they are reading.  When it all boils down to it, the more advertising your blog gets the better!!

All in one SEO Pack

It seams to be one of the most discussed topics on the web, SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is the practice of ensuring your site is at the top of the search engine results.  It was once as simple as setting a few meta tags and keywords, and many think that this is still the case, however Google (admit it, they are the one that matters) uses a complex and rather secret algorithm to determine its search rankings.  SEO is all about trying to guess and then beat the algorithm.  All in one SEO Pack takes your posts and pages and creates new meta keywords, titles and descriptions for them, whilst trying to encourage you to create extra information for the page properties.  The overall aim is to promote your site to the search engines.

Google XML Sitemaps

Along with some SEO, it always helps if Google knows where all your pages are and how they link together.  Google XML Sitemaps creates a “map” (surprisingly!!) of your site and submits it to Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask.  That way their spiders know where to look to find your all important content.

IMDB Link Transformer

Not one that I use alot, but one that I like the idea of.  It takes any film names that you type (wraped in an IMDB tag) and creates a nice flashy jscript interface to the IMDB data regarding that film.

WP-reCaptcha

A typical reCAPTCHA form

We have all seen the lovely captchas on sites, it seams that we now have to fill one out for everything that we do!  Some are really horrible noise generated backgrounds with some words.  reCaptcha is slightly different, firstly it looks nice, and can be themed to match with your site.  For the hard of sight it provides an audio prompt for the user to enter.  The special thing about reCaptcha is that it actually helps to digitize books!  Each two word set that is provided to your user, contains one word that reCaptcha know, and one word from their scanned archive that they do not know.  If your user answers the one that they know correctly, the presume that they also know the other word that was entered.  Over time enough people answer the same word correctly that reCaptcha can add it to the list of the ones that they know for sure.  That way every-time someone comments or signs up on your site, they are helping to digitize out of print works!!

And many more……. (updated 06/03/2010)

Welcome to Only Idiots Assume!!

As I am sure anyone reading this can tell, the site has had a complete overall!  To start with its not called JamesChorlton.co.uk any more, its not known as OnlyIdiotsAssume.co.uk (or .com for that matter!).  As much as I loved the previous theme, something just wasn’t right.  So here it is, something new, I hope you all like it.

I’m hoping to post entries more often, most likely on the TTPMO section of the blog, but anything will do!  A few sections of the site are offline for the moment, (TVCal etc), untill I merge them into the new theme.

Well seeing as its 8 minutes into valentines day, and my misses is sat to my right watching Marley and Me I think that I should proberly focus on her for a bit!!

So signing off,
